Wetland Protection & Restoration

Wetlands require active protection from grazing mammals and other pest species. This Claim demonstrates that a wetland area is being actively protected and managed for beneficial environmental outcomes.

Wetlands provide a critical habitat to a high number of New Zealand’s most threatened plants and animals. This Claim demonstrates the biodiversity outcomes achieved through the active protection and restoration of a wetland area.

All wetlands sequester carbon from the atmosphere through plant photosynthesis and by acting as sediment traps for runoff. This Claim calculates an increase in carbon content being stored in a wetland area. 

Drained and damaged wetlands emit carbon dioxide. This Claim calculates the carbon emissions avoided from the protection and restoration of a wetland.

This Claim demonstrates the restoration of  wetlands in ways that support the resumption of traditional cultural practices by mana whenua including mahinga kai (food gathering).
