Freshwater Protection & Restoration
Aotearoa New Zealand's fresh waterways are in a critical state. There is much work going into the protection and restoration of our fresh waterways so that our rivers can return to a state where they are free-flowing and clean.

Why protect and restore fresh waterways?
Freshwater remains one of the most critical issues facing New Zealanders. We need freshwater to survive and so do the fish, insects and plants, many of which are currently threatened with extinction.
The protection and restoration of our fresh waterways requires planting alongside river banks, reducing runoff from farms, removing weeds, predator trapping and reintroducing native species to increase biodiversity.
It is often the costs to take these actions that are limiting farmers and landowners from protecting and restoring waterways.
Bringing new income streams to farmers and landowners achieving outcomes for our fresh waterways will accelerate the restoration of one of our most damaged natural resources in Aotearoa New Zealand.
What types of outcomes can be expected from protecting fresh waterways?
Native Biodiversity Protection
Increased Carbon Sequestration
Pest & Predator Reduction
Erosion Reduction
Improved Freshwater Health

Erosion Mitigation
Developed by Troy Baisden, Nick Conland & Josh Duley
Soil erosion reduces soil fertility and pollutes waterways. This template calculates the reduction in erosion risk achieved by land management actions on farmland using the Universal Soil Loss Equation. The results show the reduction in sediment loads from a farm to their catchment and downstream water bodies.

New Native Planting
Seeking developers
Native trees are vital for providing food and habitat to our native species, improving air quality and stabilising soils. This Claim tracks the planting of blocks of new native trees and monitors the survival rate of plantings.
Open to developers
Freshwater Species Protection
Seeking developers
This Claim demonstrates how a landowner is protecting the health of the rivers and streams and measures the health of the native species living in them.
Open to developers
Waterway Protection Planting
Seeking developers
Native planting alongside rivers and streams reduces the nutrient and sediment load entering the waterway leading to greater health. This Claim demonstrates that a minimum width of native planting has been carried out and maintained alongside a fresh waterway.
Open to developers
Pledges are developed by specialists in regenerative practices and guide farmers and land managers so they can take action and measure outcomes with confidence.
New Native Planting on Farms
Seeking developers
This Pledge template would define the actions that a farmer would take to plant an area with native trees. The template defines how to capture the data that measures outcomes from increasing the amount of native forests on their farmland. This data will be used to sell Claims that prove outcomes and earn income.

“You can just see the difference it makes having stock excluded from waterways. The ferns are coming back and the younger native trees are growing.
Previously it was really erosive and every time you had the cattle on there a heap of sediment was flowing straight into the river."
