Planting New Native Forests
The planting of new native forests helps re-build lost ecosystems, provides habitat and food sources for our native birds, bees, insects and invertebrates, reduces erosion and flood damage and protects our fresh waterways.

Why plant new native forests?
The establishment of new native forests has significant benefits including providing habitat for wildlife, reducing the risk of erosion, increasing freshwater health, long term carbon sequestration and climate change adaptability.
The planting of new forests requires significant upfront investment; including retiring and fencing tracts of agricultural land, planting and ongoing maintenance, and protecting the area from pests and predators.
Much of this work is being done in the absence of any financial return, often relying on grant funding and volunteer labour.
Unlocking revenue streams for farmers and landowners planting new native forests will fast track the pathway to large-scale carbon sequestration with quality biodiversity outcomes.
What types of outcomes can be expected from planting new native forests?
Native Biodiversity Protection
Increased Carbon Sequestration
Pest & Predator Reduction

Complete a land assessment and our team will assess your opportunity to sell Claims and earn income from your environmental outcomes.
2. Sell your Claims
Select from our scientifically-supported templates and list your environmental outcomes for sale as Claims on the NZ Climate Innovation market when it launches.
3. Collect your data
Sign up to a Pledge and report the data to complete your Claim and receive your payments.
Receive offers on Claims
When the market launches, you will be able to list future, in progress or completed Claims for your environmental outcomes. Once your listing is live, you can receive offers to buy these Claims. These offers can come from private corporations, government agencies and beyond. When your Claim is complete, buyers will receive a Claim report containing verifiable data about the outcomes.

- Claim Templates
- Pledge Templates
Claim templates are developed by scientists and specialists in the field so you can buy and trade climate outcomes with confidence.
Erosion Mitigation
Developed by Troy Baisden, Nick Conland & Josh Duley
Soil erosion reduces soil fertility and pollutes waterways. This template calculates the reduction in erosion risk achieved by land management actions on farmland using the Universal Soil Loss Equation. The results show the reduction in sediment loads from a farm to their catchment and downstream water bodies.

Protect Biodiversity: Forest and Shrubland
Developed by Manaaki Whenua & EcoIndex
This template allows landowners to demonstrate that they are protecting forest or shrubland (including the establishment of new areas) as they build towards restoring ecological integrity. It includes collection of data about vegetation, ecosystem types, threatened plants, fungi, and animals, and management activities, over time and space.

New Native Planting
Seeking developers
Native trees are vital for providing food and habitat to our native species, improving air quality and stabilising soils. This Claim tracks the planting of blocks of new native trees and monitors the survival rate of plantings.

Native Seedling Supply
Seeking developers
Ecosourcing is collecting seeds close to where they will be planted. Ecosourced seeds are more likely to be suited to the local conditions and have a higher plant survival rate. This Claim confirms the supply of native seedlings and demonstrates the provenance of the seed.

Possum Control and Monitoring
Developed by Manaaki Whenua, University of Canterbury & Landcare Trust
The control of possums contributes to the recovery of native forests and biodiversity. This Claim monitors the control of brushtail possums through trapping. It demonstrates possum populations being maintained at low numbers following a prior intensive knockdown effort.

Pledges are developed by specialists in regenerative practices and guide farmers and land managers so they can take action and measure outcomes with confidence.
New Native Planting on Farms
Seeking developers
This Pledge template would define the actions that a farmer would take to plant an area with native trees. The template defines how to capture the data that measures outcomes from increasing the amount of native forests on their farmland. This data will be used to sell Claims that prove outcomes and earn income.

Henry and Sofia Gaddum are working to restore and protect biodiversity on 201.2 hectares at Kōtare Station.
Through new native planting, stock exclusion from existing forest and best practice pest management they are protecting several regionally and nationally threatened species, including the North Island Robin, Long-tailed bat and NZ Falcon.
