Why bring new revenue streams to native forest regeneration on whenua Māori?

Almost 50% of the total indigenous vegetation remaining on private land is held in Māori title. Māori freehold land blocks across Aotearoa already protect over 500,000 hectares of native forest, including around 180,000 hectares held in kawenata (covenant).

The regeneration of these forests and protection of their carbon stocks require ongoing activity; including pest and predator control, fencing and biodiversity monitoring.

Much of the protection of native forests on whenua Māori is being done in the absence of any financial return, often relying on funding and limited by restricted access to finance due to collective land ownership.

Unlocking new revenue streams for native forest regeneration on whenua Māori protects a significant proportion of Aotearoa New Zealands native biodiversity and existing carbon stock.
