Farmers for Native Biodiversity

The protection and restoration of native forest on farms has huge benefits. Both the farm business and the environment benefit from increasing biodiversity, reducing erosion, protecting fresh waterways and reducing the damage caused by floods.

Why protect and restore native forest on farms?

The protection and restoration of native forests can include planting new native trees, fencing off existing native bush and protecting forests from browsing mammals such as wild goats and pigs, and predator species such as rats, possums and stoats.

About half of our country’s land area is covered with native bush and ecosystems. However, this is shrinking every year as more and more land is cleared for agriculture or forestry.

The regeneration of native bush has significant benefits for farmers including erosion control, freshwater health, long term carbon sequestration and climate change adaptability. Our native ecosystems contribute to our sense of wellbeing and are home to many of our iconic native plants and animals.

1. Create an impact plan

Complete a land assessment and our team will assess your opportunity to sell Claims and earn income from your environmental outcomes.

Group 16

2. Sell your Claims

You will be able to select from our scientifically-supported templates and list your environmental outcomes for sale as Claims on the NZ Climate Innovation market.

Collect your data

3. Collect your data

You will be able to sign up to a Pledge to track progress and report the data needed to complete your Claims.

Group 5

Receive offers on Claims

When the market launches, you will be able to list future, in progress or completed Claims for your environmental outcomes. Once your listing is live, you can receive offers to buy these Claims. These offers can come from private corporations, government agencies and beyond. When your Claim is complete, buyers will receive a Claim report containing verifiable data about the outcomes.

Gaddum Farm

Henry and Sofie Gaddum are working to restore and protect biodiversity on 201.2 hectares of indigenous forest at Kōtare Station.

Through best practice pest management they will protect several regionally and nationally threatened species, including the North Island Robin, Long-tailed bat and NZ Falcon.

Claim templates are developed by scientists and specialists in the field so you can buy and trade climate outcomes with confidence.

Protect Biodiversity: Forest and Shrubland

Developed by Manaaki Whenua & EcoIndex

Addresses actions to Protect native biodiversity, in the context of a proposed long-term goal of Protecting, Restoring, and Connecting native biodiversity.

The template allows landowners to demonstrate that they are protecting forest or shrubland (including the establishment of new areas) as they build towards restoring ecological integrity. It includes collection of data about vegetation, ecosystem types, threatened plants, fungi, and animals, and management activities, over time and space.

Possum Control and Monitoring

Developed by Manaaki Whenua, University of Canterbury & Landcare Trust

Provides monitoring data on control of introduced brushtail possums through trapping. It is designed to provide evidence that possum populations are being maintained at low numbers following a prior intensive knockdown effort. Control of possums contributes to recovery of native biodiversity.

Preservation of Existing Native Cover

Seeking template developer

This Claim template would support a land manager to report the data that shows the preservation of existing cover on private land, in order to maintain carbon reserves.

Erosion Control

Developed by Troy Baisden, Nick Conland & Josh Duley

Soil erosion reduces soil fertility and pollutes waterways. This template calculates the reduction in erosion risk achieved by land management actions (including revegetation, riparian planting, installing bunds, and pasture, stock and crop management opportunities) on productive land in Aotearoa New Zealand using the Universal Soil Loss Equation.

The results show the reduction in sediment loads (weather over 5 years) from a farm or farms to their catchment(s) and downstream water bodie(s).

Pledges are developed by specialists in regenerative practices and guide farmers and land managers so they can take action and measure outcomes with confidence.

Biodiversity Management

Developed by Steve Sawyer
Ecoworks New Zealand

This Pledge supports farmers to capture the data about the actions they are taking to protect and monitor native biodiversity.

The data collected can be used to create and sell Claims that prove climate outcomes and earn income.

New Native Planting on Farmland

Seeking developer

The purpose of this Pledge is to support farmers to capture the data that measures outcomes from increasing the amount of native forests on their farmland.

The data collected can be used to create and sell Claims that prove climate outcomes and earn income.

“You can just see the difference it makes having stock excluded. The ferns are coming back and the younger native trees are growing. Previously it was really erosive and every time you had the cattle on there a heap of sediment was flowing straight into the river."
