Under indigenous management, native forests not only sequester carbon and enhance biodiversity but also support the reconnection of whānau, hapū and iwi with their ancestral lands. Almost 50% of the total indigenous vegetation remaining on private land is held in Māori title. Māori freehold land blocks across Aotearoa already protect over 500,000 hectares of native forest, including around 180,000 hectares held in kawenata (covenant). The regeneration of these forests and protection of their carbon stocks require ongoing activity; including pest and predator control, fencing and biodiversity monitoring. Much of the protection of native forests on whenua Māori is being done in the absence of any financial return, often relying on funding and limited by restricted access to finance due to collective land ownership. Once your listing is live, you can receive offers to buy these Claims. These offers can come from private corporations, government agencies and beyond.
